Agriwaste Charcoal
(with Friends of Petite Anse, MIT, and ORE)
How can we turn agricultural waste into a clean burning cooking fuel?
Solution: A US$20 system of technologies that allow an entrepreneur to convert agricultural waste into a high-value cooking charcoal. The economics: the cost of traditional wood charcoal in Haiti is more than the food it cooks. This portfolio of simple technologies essentially turns ‘lead into gold’, giving entrepreneurs that make and sell the product a huge return on investment, with payback in under 1 month.
Deployed in 20+ countries, among them: Haiti, Pakistan, Ghana, El Salvador, Kenya, Thailand, Tanzania, Peru
